Tianjin is a major city in northern China, positioned near the Bohai Sea where the Haihe River runs through the urban center. Its character has been shaped by maritime trade, river transport, industry, and its proximity to Beijing. The city combines a historic Chinese core with broad avenues, former foreign concession districts, modern commercial areas, and a large port. Along the Haihe River, bridges, promenades, historic buildings, and contemporary landmarks create one of Tianjin’s most distinctive urban landscapes. The city is also known for its unusual combination of Chinese architectural traditions and European-influenced buildings.

Tianjin’s cultural identity can be explored particularly well along Ancient Culture Street, centered on the Tianhou Temple and lined with traditional shops and craft businesses. The area preserves associations with Mazu worship and Tianjin’s history of waterborne trade, while local crafts include Yangliuqing New Year paintings, Zhang clay figurines, and Wei kites. The Five Great Avenues provide a contrasting architectural landscape, with thousands of historic buildings in British, French, Italian, German, and Spanish styles. The Italian Style Town along the Haihe River contains more than 100 Italian-style buildings and former residences associated with notable Chinese figures.

The Haihe River is one of the city’s principal scenic features, with boat cruises providing views of bridges, historic buildings, and modern landmarks. The Tianjin Eye, a large Ferris wheel built above the Yongle Bridge, is another recognizable feature of the riverfront. Binhai New Area extends toward the coast and contains the National Maritime Museum of China, which explores the country’s relationship with the oceans. Within the central city, parks, historic streets, and waterfront promenades provide quieter spaces between busy commercial districts. Tianjin’s extensive urban landscape also reflects its role as one of northern China’s major transportation and port centers.

Tianjin has a distinctive local food culture, particularly known for dishes served at breakfast stalls and traditional neighborhood shops. Goubuli baozi, steamed buns filled with meat, is one of the city’s best-known foods, while jianbing guozi, a savory crepe made with egg and crisp dough, is widely associated with Tianjin. Erduoyan fried cakes and mahua, a twisted fried dough snack, are other local specialties. Seafood also features in the city’s cuisine because of its proximity to the Bohai coast. Traditional foods and handicrafts found along Ancient Culture Street provide a direct connection to Tianjin’s regional culinary and folk traditions.

Shanghai
Shanghai
Shanghai is a city where contrasting timelines meet at every corner. Once a small fishing village along the Huangpu River, it grew rapidly during the 19th century into a major trading port. Today, its skyline tells a story of that transformation. On one side, the Bund’s colonial-era buildings stand tall in limestone and granite; on the other, the futuristic towers of Pudong, like the Shanghai Tower and Jin Mao, stretch into the clouds.
