Kolkata, often referred to as the "City of Joy," is a mesmerizing blend of rich history, culture, and artistic heritage that makes it a must-visit destination for any traveler to India. Once the capital of British India, Kolkata retains much of its colonial-era charm with iconic landmarks like the Victoria Memorial, a stunning marble building surrounded by lush gardens, which now serves as a museum showcasing the city’s colonial and Indian history. A stroll along the Hooghly River, especially on the historic Howrah Bridge, offers captivating views of the city’s skyline and a glimpse into daily life in this bustling metropolis.

The city is also a cultural powerhouse, home to many literary and artistic greats, such as Rabindranath Tagore, India’s first Nobel Laureate. Kolkata's love for the arts can be felt throughout its vibrant neighborhoods, from the bustling College Street, known as the "Boi Para" or Book Town, where you can find rare books and enjoy a cup of tea at the iconic Indian Coffee House, to the artistic quarters of Kumartuli, where artisans craft the exquisite clay idols for the city’s many festivals. Durga Puja, the city's most famous festival, transforms Kolkata into a kaleidoscope of lights, music, and creativity, attracting millions of visitors every year to experience its grandeur.

Food in Kolkata is an attraction in itself, with a gastronomic landscape that reflects the city’s diverse influences. Street food such as puchkas (spicy water-filled dough balls), kathi rolls, and jhal muri are beloved by locals and visitors alike. For those with a sweet tooth, Kolkata is famous for its desserts like rasgulla and sandesh, traditional Bengali sweets made from fresh chhena (cheese). A visit to the historic Park Street, lined with colonial-era buildings and legendary eateries, provides a perfect setting for a culinary adventure.

Fun fact: Kolkata is home to the oldest operational tram network in Asia, a charming remnant of its colonial past. Established in 1873, the trams are still an essential part of the city's public transport system, offering a unique way to explore the city’s history and streets at a leisurely pace.

Dakshineshwar temple

Dakshineswar Kali Temple is a major Hindu pilgrimage site on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, north of central Kolkata, dedicated to the goddess Bhavatarini, a form of Kali. The temple complex is recognized for its distinctive Bengali architecture, with the main shrine crowned by nine spires and surrounded by smaller Shiva temples and a Vishnu temple. Its religious importance is closely connected with the mystic Sri Ramakrishna, who served as a priest at the temple and spent years practicing and teaching there. The riverside setting, temple courtyards, bathing ghats, and rows of shrines make the complex an important part of Kolkata’s religious landscape.
