Trévani is a coastal village on the northern side of Mayotte’s Grande-Terre, facing the island’s large lagoon. It is part of the commune of Koungou and is known for its waterfront setting, tropical vegetation, and access to the sea. The village sits near a sheltered bay where the coast curves around shallow lagoon waters, creating a landscape closely connected to fishing and marine activities. Trévani is also home to a small marina and several places offering accommodation and water-based activities, making it one of the northern island’s better-known coastal areas.

Trévani reflects the wider cultural character of Mayotte, where Comorian and Malagasy traditions exist alongside French institutions. Daily life in the village is closely linked to the sea, with fishing, boating, and family activities forming part of the local identity. The surrounding commune of Koungou includes communities where Islam is an important part of social and cultural life. Visitors can also encounter local traditions through food, markets, music, and celebrations. The northern part of Grande-Terre has retained a largely village-based character, offering a different setting from the more urban environment around Mamoudzou.

The lagoon is the main attraction around Trévani, with warm waters protected by Mayotte’s extensive coral reef system. The coast provides opportunities for kayaking, snorkeling, diving, and boat excursions, while the surrounding waters support sea turtles, reef fish, dolphins, and other marine life. Trévani Beach is backed by tropical vegetation and offers views across the lagoon toward the distant islands and reefs. Inland, the northern hills rise into a green landscape of forests, plantations, and cultivated areas. The nearby Passamaïnty and Koungou coastline also provides additional viewpoints and access to the island’s varied volcanic terrain.

Food in Trévani reflects Mayotte’s Indian Ocean setting, with seafood, rice, coconut, spices, bananas, cassava, and tropical fruit appearing frequently in local cooking. Fish and other seafood are particularly suited to the village’s coastal location and may be prepared with fragrant sauces or served alongside rice and vegetables. Trévani is also notable for its marina and its role as a starting point for exploring the lagoon by boat. The combination of a sheltered coast, nearby coral reefs, tropical hills, and a small-scale village setting gives Trévani a distinct place within northern Mayotte.
