Tokeh is a coastal town on Sierra Leone’s Freetown Peninsula in the Western Area Rural District, between River No. 2 and York. Fishing and tourism are important parts of the local economy, while the town is surrounded by forested hills and the Atlantic Ocean. Tokeh Beach forms a broad crescent of pale sand backed by palms and green slopes, with accommodation ranging from local facilities to established beach resorts. Nearby Tokeh Island, an uninhabited island, can be reached by boat and adds another destination to the coastal setting.

Tokeh’s identity is closely tied to fishing and its long-established coastal community. The town also developed a reputation as a seaside resort, with tourism becoming an important part of its local economy. Earlier resort development left a lasting mark on the area, and newer accommodation has brought visitors back to the beach. Community life remains connected to the sea, with fishing continuing alongside tourism and hospitality. Tokeh also sits within a culturally diverse region of the peninsula, where different Sierra Leonean communities contribute to the area’s social and cultural character.

Tokeh Beach is the main attraction, with a long sandy shoreline bordered by palms, rainforest-covered hills, and Atlantic waters. Tokeh Island lies just offshore and provides an opportunity for short boat excursions. River No. 2 Beach is immediately north of Tokeh and can be reached on foot along the coast when conditions allow, linking two well-known beaches of the Freetown Peninsula. The surrounding landscape combines beaches, river systems, forest, and mountains, while the coastal waters support activities such as swimming, boating, fishing, and other water-based recreation.

Fresh seafood is an important part of the food experience in Tokeh, reflecting the town’s fishing economy. Local meals commonly center on fish and other seafood served with rice, vegetables, or sauces, while nearby resorts also offer seafood-focused menus. One distinctive feature of Tokeh is the contrast between its traditional fishing community and its developed beach accommodation. The area is also known for its long wooden pier, beach huts, and views toward the forested peninsula. Its location makes Tokeh a convenient coastal base for exploring nearby beaches south of Freetown.
