Erg Chebbi is a large field of wind-shaped sand dunes in southeastern Morocco, near the village of Merzouga in the Drâa-Tafilalet region. It forms one of Morocco’s best-known Sahara landscapes, rising abruptly from the surrounding rocky desert. The dunes stretch for roughly 28 kilometres from north to south, with some of the highest crests reaching about 150 metres. Their deep orange and golden tones change noticeably with the position of the sun. The nearby village of Merzouga serves as the main gateway, providing access to desert camps, walking routes, camel excursions, and four-wheel-drive trips.

The cultural landscape around Erg Chebbi is closely connected to the Amazigh and Sahrawi communities of southeastern Morocco. For generations, desert communities have relied on knowledge of water sources, grazing areas, seasonal routes, and caravan paths to move through this demanding environment. The nearby Tafilalet region was also linked to trans-Saharan trade, with caravans travelling between North Africa and areas farther south. Local cultural traditions remain visible through music, handicrafts, clothing, storytelling, and the preparation of mint tea. In nearby Khamlia, Gnawa music provides another important expression of the region’s diverse cultural heritage.

The dunes themselves are the principal attraction, with broad ridges, steep slopes, and smaller valleys shaped continuously by wind. Visitors can climb the larger dunes for views across the sand field and the surrounding rocky plains, while sunrise and sunset reveal strong changes in colour and shadow. Near Merzouga, Dayet Srij is a seasonal lake that can attract flamingos and other birds when water is present. The desert around the erg also supports hardy plants and animals adapted to extreme conditions. Camel trekking, sandboarding, hiking, and guided 4x4 excursions provide different ways to explore the landscape.

Food around Erg Chebbi reflects the cuisine of southeastern Morocco, with tagine, couscous, bread, dates, vegetables, and aromatic spices commonly served in local homes, guesthouses, and desert camps. Mint tea is an important part of hospitality and is traditionally prepared and offered to guests during social occasions. Desert camps may also feature Amazigh music and communal meals around an evening fire. A distinctive detail of Erg Chebbi is its sudden transition from flat, stony desert to towering sand dunes. This sharp contrast makes the site particularly recognizable and explains why Merzouga has become a major gateway to Morocco’s Sahara.

Fès
Fès
A series of gates surrounds the two centers of ancient, medieval Fez (sometimes spelled Fes). The principal axes link the center to the gates and a street surrounds the heart of the old city. The Kairouan quarter, which is longer, is crossed by an artery. Narrow, tortuous pedestrian streets, covered passages, stairs and numerous dead-ends make up the dense layout with few urban squares.
