Mgarr is a rural village in northwestern Malta, surrounded by some of the island’s most extensive areas of farmland and open countryside. Its name is associated with a sheltered place or landing area, reflecting Malta’s long relationship with agriculture and rural settlement. The village is centered on the large parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, whose distinctive dome dominates the surrounding landscape. Outside the built-up area, fields, limestone walls, vineyards, and country lanes give Mgarr a markedly agricultural character compared with Malta’s more densely developed coastal towns.

Mgarr has a strong connection with Malta’s rural traditions and religious life. The Parish Church of the Assumption, commonly known as the Mgarr Parish Church, is dedicated to the Assumption and is one of the village’s most recognizable landmarks. The area also contains several prehistoric sites, including the Ta’ Ħaġrat temples, a UNESCO-listed megalithic complex built from large limestone blocks. Nearby Skorba contains the remains of early farming settlements and temples, providing evidence of Malta’s prehistoric communities and their agricultural way of life.

The countryside around Mgarr offers a different landscape from the urban areas farther east, with cultivated fields extending between limestone ridges and valleys. Il-Majjistral Nature and History Park lies close to the village and protects coastal countryside, traditional agricultural landscapes, and habitats shaped by Malta’s dry Mediterranean climate. Ghajn Tuffieha Bay and Golden Bay are also nearby, with sandy beaches set between rugged coastal slopes. The area around Dingli and the northwest coast provides further opportunities to see Malta’s characteristic limestone cliffs, valleys, terraced fields, and rural footpaths.

Food is an important part of Mgarr’s identity, particularly dishes based on locally grown produce and seasonal ingredients. The village is well known in Malta for its agricultural products, including strawberries, grapes, olives, and other fruit and vegetables. Traditional restaurants serve Maltese dishes such as rabbit stew, baked pasta, ġbejniet cheese, and seasonal vegetable preparations. Mgarr is also associated with the annual Festa Frawli, or Strawberry Festival, which celebrates the local strawberry harvest with fresh berries, desserts, preserves, and other foods. The festival reflects the continuing importance of farming to the village’s economy and traditions.
