Parga is a coastal town in Epirus, northwestern Greece, built in an amphitheater around a sheltered bay on the Ionian Sea. Colorful houses rise along the hillside toward the Venetian castle, while the small islet of Panagia sits just offshore with a chapel and the remains of a French fort. The old town is characterized by narrow cobbled lanes, stone arches, and traditional houses, while the waterfront is lined with cafés, tavernas, and small boats. Its setting combines a mountainous mainland landscape with beaches and sheltered coves, giving Parga a distinct character within coastal Epirus.

Parga’s history reflects the strategic importance of its position on the Ionian coast. The town was successively controlled by Normans, Venetians, French, British, and Ottomans, with the Venetian period leaving a particularly strong architectural and cultural imprint. The Venetian Castle overlooks the old town and harbour, while Ali Pasha Castle stands on a hill above nearby Anthousa. The town also has connections with the Greek struggle for independence, and local churches, old houses, and fortifications preserve elements of Parga’s varied past.

The coastline around Parga includes several distinct beaches, with Valtos stretching beneath the Venetian castle and Kryoneri located beside the town centre. Lichnos Beach lies farther south among olive groves and hills, while Sarakiniko occupies a sheltered coastal setting beyond the main town. Inland, walking routes pass through olive groves and wooded hills toward Anthousa, where a waterfall and restored watermills provide points of interest. These landscapes connect Parga’s historic centre with the broader countryside of Epirus, where mountains, rivers, and the Ionian coastline meet.

Local food reflects the culinary traditions of Epirus and the Ionian coast, with seafood, grilled meats, cheeses, olive oil, and savory pies commonly found in Parga’s tavernas. Regional specialties include pies made with greens or cheese, while nearby Epirus is also known for slow-cooked lamb and goat and locally produced dairy products. The waterfront provides a setting for traditional tavernas alongside modern cafés and restaurants. Boat excursions from Parga provide access to nearby beaches and coastal areas, while the town’s proximity to the Acheron River adds another natural and cultural destination to the surrounding region.
